Izak Parviz Nazarian was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1929. He attended the Alliance Israelite Universal Elementary School and graduated from the Technical High School. In September of 1947, he joined the Hagana in Genoa, Italy, where he received military training. He served in the 7th Tank Brigade of the IDF and fought in Israel’s War of Independence in 1948.

While pursuing various businesses ventures, he helped numerous Israeli companies establish a presence in Iran. During his years in Iran, Mr. Nazarian was instrumental in developing relationships between Israeli dignitaries and the Iranian government officials. At that time, he was also involved with a number of charitable and community organizations.

At the onset of the Islamic Revolution, Parviz Nazarian left Iran in June of 1979 and settled in Los Angeles with his wife Pouran and four children, Dora, Dalia, Daphna, and Benjamin.

Throughout the years, Mr. Nazarian has been a prolific leader in the Los Angeles Iranian Jewish community. He has been a committed supporter of the State of Israel and its social causes, both in the United States and in Israel. During the 1980’s, Parviz assisted Armand Hammer in organizing a secret migration of Russian Jews through Armenia and their absorption into Israel. He is one of the founders of the Iranian American Jewish Federation established in Los Angeles in 1982. In 1989, Mr. Nazarian co-founded The Magbit Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. He served as President and Chairman of this organization for numerous terms.

In 2002, Izak Parviz Nazarian established The Citizens’ Empowerment Center in Israel (CECI). CECI is a non-profit, apolitical organization which aims to empower Israeli citizens with a better understanding of their rights and obligations in a democratic society and to research alternatives to the current party-based electoral system through non-political educational programs for a stronger, more stable Israeli government.

In May of 2003, Izak Parviz Nazarian received a Doctorate of Philosophy Honorary Degree from Tel Aviv University in recognition for his spirit and resourcefulness in transforming himself from a destitute child into a successful entrepreneur, community leader and philanthropist, and for his lifelong support of the State of Israel.
